Australia's population has more than
doubled over the last 50 years from a resident population of 9
million in 1955 to over 20 million in 2005. In
2007 there are 5 people of working age to support every person aged
65 and over. By 2047, there will only be 2.4 people of working age
supporting each person aged 65 and over.
All states and territories experienced positive
population growth over the 12 months ended 30 June 2007. Western
Australia recorded the largest percentage gain (2.3%) and Tasmania
the smallest (0.7%).
Sydney is the largest city in Australia; it has over
4,285,000 people. Other large cities include Melbourne, Brisbane,
Perth, Adelaide, and Newcastle.
